Elimination communication

she's wearing a diaper!I read an interesting article in Maclean’s magazine (Oct. 17, 2005 issue) entitled "Goo-Goo-Gotta-Go!" last week. It was about a group or parents who subscribe to a "growing global movement" called EC, or Elimination Communication. The premise is that diapers are unhygienic, costly, they wreak havoc on the environment and are unnecessary. These moms prefer to begin to identify their baby's "I feel a pee comin' on" glances and rush them to the nearest drain - toilet, sink, tub...whatever.

This is the deal: you're supposed to notice that the baby needs to go, then hold him over the container while he does his business. All the while, you’re making a cuing sound. Eventually he will make that same sound to show mom that it’s time for the potty run. If he doesn’t, the article claims “maternal instinct will kick in.”

Lyla, who is currently studying ECE, seemed to agree at least in part. She thought the idea of being able to read your baby was a good thing. To me it just seems like a huge commitment, and impossible for parents who have the need or desire to work.

The article also discusses the fact that our diaper dependence is a Western phenomenon. EC is the norm in Africa, India and China. In Thailand I remember holding a diaperless baby, but I also remember the warm liquid running down my body as I was holding her. It was really freaky for a 15-year-old baby-phobic girl. (not that I welcome anyone’s pee on me even now)

Pamela Andrews, a member of the Toronto chapter, says, "Most people are converted when they catch their first pooh." Call me crazy, but if that's what it takes for conversion, I think I may just remain a heathen.
